Spiritual Vacation?

Galatians 5:16-18

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

As I am a writing this blog I’m sitting on a screened-in porch, overlooking a beautiful lake, surrounded by palm trees and cypress trees. Not to mention it’s 75 degrees. I’m in Florida vacationing with my family. I believe R&R with family is vital. Personal R&R is a physical necessity. But, a spiritual vacation is NOT an option. Yet, this is where many Christians are challenged, for there is a battle being waged between the physical and the spiritual.  Between the flesh and the spirit. All of us were born with a sinful nature that draws us towards the flesh and sinful things. It is easy for us, on a daily basis, to only feed our flesh side and not our spiritual side…even easier on a vacation. Paul says, “live by the spirit and you WILL NOT gratify the desires of the sinful nature.” In other words, living in the Spirit starts with an infilling of the HOLY SPIRIT. You have to come to the point of complete surrender to the Holy Spirit if you want to say NO to the fleshly side that wants to control you. The battle is on!

Paul tells us in verse 17 that “the sinful nature (flesh) desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in CONFLICT.” Daily, a battle is fought between the flesh and the Spirit. Daily, you choose who will win out. Daily, you need to die out to selfishness. Daily, you need to wake up and consecrate your self to Jesus. Who will win out on this day… You or Him?

I don’t want this vacation to be all about me and feeding my flesh with beaches, pools, boats, lakes, FISHING, 🙂 amusement parks, etc. I want to feed my spiritual side! I want my relationship with Jesus to grow on this day , not decline! (vs. 19-21 give a picture of what the flesh side looks like when it wins out.)

I’m praying for all those that are reading this blog right now. You can, with the Holy spirit indwelling you, feed your spirit and not your flesh today.

Blessings, Pastor Bill Hines
